Fungal skin infections are among the most common dermatological conditions treated in UK pharmacies. They’re caused by dermatophyte fungi or Candida yeasts, thrive in warm, moist conditions, and respond well to OTC antifungal treatment — if treated correctly.

Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis)

Athlete’s foot affects the spaces between toes and the soles of the feet. Symptoms: itching, burning, scaling and maceration (softening) between the toes; peeling and redness on the soles in the moccasin type. Spread via shared surfaces: gym floors, swimming pool changing rooms, shared towels. Treatment: terbinafine 1% cream (Lamisil) for 1–2 weeks is most effective — kills fungi. Clotrimazole 1% cream (Canesten) for 4 weeks is an alternative. Keep feet dry — particularly between toes. Rotate shoes. Use antifungal powder in footwear for prevention.

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis) and Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)

Ringworm of the body: a ring-shaped, scaly rash with a clearer centre and raised border — it’s not a worm. Highly contagious through skin contact and shared items. Treat with clotrimazole or terbinafine cream for 2–4 weeks. Jock itch: groin fungal infection, more common in men. Same treatments. Keep area dry; avoid tight clothing.

Fungal Nail Infections (Onychomycosis)

Fungal nail infection makes nails thickened, discoloured (yellow/brown/white), crumbly and sometimes painful. It’s the most difficult superficial fungal infection to treat. OTC: amorolfine 5% nail lacquer (Curanail, Loceryl) applied weekly for 6–12 months. Good nail hygiene essential. Clip and file nails before treatment. When to see a GP: if more than 2 nails affected, if distal third is involved, or if OTC treatment has failed — oral terbinafine (prescription) has much higher cure rates.

Candida Skin Infections

Candida causes infection in warm skin folds (under breasts, groin, armpits, between fingers in those who have hands in water frequently). Red, itchy, raw-looking rash with satellite spots. Treat with miconazole or clotrimazole cream. Keep area dry; antifungal powder helpful for prevention.
