FAQs on Heartburn Symptoms and Indigestion

1. What are the common symptoms of heartburn?
Heartburn typically presents as a burning sensation in the chest, often after eating, along with a sour or bitter taste in the mouth. It can also cause discomfort when lying down or bending over.

2. What causes heartburn?
Heartburn is caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus, which irritates the lining. This can happen due to overeating, spicy or fatty foods, alcohol, caffeine, or lying down after meals.

3. How is heartburn different from indigestion?
Heartburn refers to the burning sensation in the chest, while indigestion (dyspepsia) is a general term for discomfort in the upper abdomen, including bloating, nausea, and a feeling of fullness.

4. When should I see a doctor for heartburn or indigestion?
You should see a doctor if you experience heartburn more than twice a week, have trouble swallowing, persistent nausea, or if the symptoms are severe or don’t improve with over-the-counter treatments.

5. Can stress cause heartburn indigestion?
Yes, stress can worsen symptoms of heartburn and indigestion by increasing stomach acid production or causing unhealthy eating habits that trigger symptoms.

6. What lifestyle changes can help reduce heartburn?
Eating smaller meals, avoiding trigger foods (spicy, fatty, or acidic foods), quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and not lying down immediately after eating can help reduce heartburn.
